Peer Assisted Study Sessions

Job Description for Level I  -  SI Leaders

General Duties

  1. Develop a good working relationship with the SI Coordinator and with the course instructor/professor.
  2. Be conscientious about the required paperwork – sign-in sheets; attendance spreadsheets; timesheets; planning sheets.
  3. Promote the program aggressively – talk to the students; email the students; distribute flyers; ask instructor to announce the session times, etc.
  4. Facilitate study sessions, using skills and techniques highlighted during training and in the training manual.
  5. Focus on learning strategies/outcomes – what do students need to know after spending an hour with you during the study session?
  6. Offer study skill “tools” and show students how to determine which tool is appropriate for different learning situations.
  7. Incorporate critical thinking skills and problem solving skills into study sessions.
  8. Be aware of student’s issues and know how to refer students to appropriate resources on campus.
  9. Be flexible and comfortable dealing with people who are different from you.  Accommodate different learning styles and different backgrounds/lifestyles in your study sessions.

Additional Duties for Saluki Advantage SI Leaders

  1. Schedule regular study sessions times in the residence halls for your group members.
  2. Schedule at least two special activities for the group members for the fall semester.
  3. Make plans with students in the FIG group to continue their relationships through the spring semester.
