Peer Assisted Study Sessions

Job Description for Level II  -  Academic Coaches

Academic coaches may elect to earn college credit for their training by enrolling in EAHE 402 (one credit hour, elective course). This course is offered only in the fall semesters.

General Duties

  1. Develop a good working relationship with the SI Coordinator and with the student who is seeking academic assistance.  Learn how to set appropriate boundaries with students in the helping relationship.
  2. Be conscientious about the required paperwork – referrals, LASSI results, academic plans, etc.
  3. Assist in promoting the program.  This may include making presentations to RSOs and residence hall groups, and at SOAR programs.
  4. Facilitate study sessions, using skills and techniques highlighted during training and in the training manual.
  5. Focus on learning strategies/outcomes – what do students need to know after spending an hour with the Academic Coach during the study session?
  6. Offer study skill “tools” and show students how to determine which tool is appropriate for different learning situations.
  7. Incorporate critical thinking skills and problem solving skills into study sessions.
  8. Be aware of student’s issues and know how to refer students to appropriate resources on campus.
  9. Be flexible and comfortable dealing with people who are different.  Integrate different learning styles and different backgrounds/lifestyles in the study sessions.
